On February 12th at 8:45 Am, Officers Wong and Leong responded to 23rd and DeHaro regarding a robbery. As soon as they arrived, they met with a witness to the incident who had also been the one to call the police. She told the officers that she had just observed a victim get robbed of her iPhone while waiting for the bus at 23rd and Rhode Island. She stated that she followed the suspect as he ran off and pointed the officers to his direction of flight, providing them with an excellent clothing description.
The officers took off to look for this suspect post haste. Apparently, making his get away by running UP the hill was not very advantageous to the suspect. The officers found him huffing and puffing on the 1900 block of 23rd St, in the middle of removing and attempting to discard the very clothing the witness had so distinctly described. He even set down the phone he had just stolen to accomplish his doffing. He was too tired to resist when the officers detained him and recovered the stolen phone.
The witness made a positive identification but the officers were still faced with a problem. The actual victim to the crime did not stick around and could not be located anywhere (It’s hard to have a case without a victim). The officers, however, did not let this deter them. They looked through the recovered phone and were able to obtain all of the victim’s contact info, including her employment address, from its files. Just as they suspected, the victim did not stick around because she had to go to work, which is exactly where they located her.
The victim confirmed that she was in fact robbed by a suspect of her iPhone at the bus stop when she was using her phone to check on the MUNI schedule. Although she was very frightened, she was not hurt as a result of the incident. The victim identified her phone, and more importantly, the suspect who was booked for the crime.
This great arrest might not have happened if it was not for a Good Samaritan who chose to get involved. We commend and thank her! (Case #110152975)
