The Bayview Crime Blotter has really picked up in recent months. Not in terms of crime, but in the quality of writing. Check out this edition below.

On May 11th at 11:30pm, Officers Zeltser and Haro were on routine patrol in the area of Newcomb and Newhall when they attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The car did not immediately pull over and the officers saw that the passenger was shifting around a lot in his seat. The car finally came to a stop after several blocks and the officers approached the vehicle on foot. In doing so, Officer Zeltser was able to see into the car through the rear windshield with the help of his flashlight. He observed the passenger place something into the driver’s handbag which was located on the center console. Further inquiry revealed that the passenger was on active parole and was subject to search at any time as a condition of that parole. The officers asked both occupants to step out of the vehicle.
The passenger complied but the driver refused. The officer explained that he would have to check her bag to determine what it was that he saw her passenger place into it. At this, she became extremely nervous and began to reach into the bag herself. The officer, understanding the danger of the situation reacted swiftly and grabbed her hand as it reached into the purse. That’s when he felt the unmistakable sensation of touching the cold steel of a handgun…. the struggle for the gun was brief and, fortunately, the officer prevailed. Along with the loaded and cocked .45 caliber semi automatic handgun the officers located a bag of ecstasy pills in the purse as well. The driver, who had several felony convictions, along with her parolee friend were arrested and booked at Bayview Station. (Case No. 100438569)

A side note on this and other similar cases: Did you know that guns have their own individual “fingerprints”? When a gun is seized from anywhere or any person is arrested with a gun, an investigation into the weapon itself begins. Many firearms have a story to tell. Forensic testing on a firearm can yield valuable evidence to help determine if that particular weapon was involved in any previously unsolved crimes. We'll see about this one.

*******************

On May 12th at 5:30pm, Bayview Plainclothes Officers learned of the whereabouts of a subject with an outstanding no bail arrest warrant involving weapons violations. They also had information that the subject may be armed. They responded to an address in the area of Ordway and Girard (Ingleside) and set up surveillance. Almost immediately, the suspect was located inside a car just outside the house in question. Officers Ochoa and Johnson thought that this would be easier than they anticipated.....they were wrong.

As the officers approached the vehicle on foot, identified themselves to the suspect, and ordered him to show them his hands. He clearly had another idea. The suspect looked straight at the cops, shook his head “no”, and started the engine. The officers, knowing where this was headed, got back into their own car at which point the suspect began to drive directly at them - head on! The officers had to swerve abruptly to avoid getting creamed by this guy and managed to recover just in time to catch his direction and initiate a pursuit. This guy was hell bent on getting away - blowing through stop signs and driving on the wrong side of the road with no regard for anyone around him in his attempt to escape. Regardless of how important it is to get the bad guy, the officers had to weigh that against putting innocent people in danger. The Bayview officers backed off and the suspect sped away. That’s OK though, every cop in two neighboring districts had listened to what had gone on!

The suspect attempted to ram a couple of patrol cars that he encountered in his flight across the southeast section of the City. This was not going to be easy. It was going to take some serious tactical thinking, some patience, and teamwork. If you've been reading these emails long - the cops in the Bayview and our neighboring partner stations are always up to the task. The suspect, wanting to get on the freeway, did not feel he should have to wait in traffic along with everyone else so he rammed his car in between two others and squeezed his way onto the freeway. The passengers of the cars he hit were not injured. Enough was enough. This guy had to be stopped! Once on the freeway, he travelled all the way to South San Francisco and back again before he stopped in the #1 lane, hopped the center divide, and ran across the freeway through traffic. The cops bounced out of their cars and joined what was now a foot chase....the boys and girls assigned to Bayview, Mission, and Ingleside love nothing more than stretching their legs in a sunny afternoon. It ended, as foot chases in the Bayview usually do, with the suspect in custody. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured. The list of violations this guy was charged with is too long to count. One thing is for certain: The streets are a little bit safer now with this guy behind bars. (Case No. 100441415)

This is my favorite:

"The cops bounced out of their cars and joined what was now a foot chase....the boys and girls assigned to Bayview, Mission, and Ingleside love nothing more than stretching their legs in a sunny afternoon."

Can't believe that guy crossed 101 on foot. What a guy.
