On Sunday, Nov. 8, I set out to do some tree trimming with with Karter Bui, one of my fellow neighbors on the 900 block of Wisconsin.

We wanted to:
  • Make the block safer by increasing visibility. The trees blocked people from seeing up and down the street, and from residents' windows to the street
  • Make the street look better, by trimming back the overgrown trees
Karter and I kicked off the tree trimming at 2 pm. Before long, other neighbors joined us to help. More important, many more donated their compost bins. The tough part about tree trimming isn't cutting the branches, it's finding a place to put all the trimmings. It was a great neighborhood activity that brought a lot of people together, and allowed me to have some fun monkeying up my tree. I strongly encourage any other blocks to do the same kind of activity — it really allows people to meet their neighbors and improve their block.
