Home of the Potrero Boosters Neighborhood Association & all things Potrero Hill
When Margaret walked into the Daniel Webster library to learn about Reading Partners, she seemed right at home. And, in a sense, she was. Her kids, now grown, had attended Daniel Webster. She talked all about how the school used to look when they were students, and her bright smile showed how important the school community was to her – both then and now.
Margaret now tutors a Daniel Webster third grader in reading twice a week. Every time she opens the door, her student’s face lights up and she jumps up to greet Margaret. Because of Margaret’s continued dedication to Daniel Webster, and the bond she has cultivated with this third grader, her student is excited to come to Reading Partners tutoring each week. This excitement has fueled her enjoyment of reading – instead of a struggle, reading is now a skill she is motivated to practice and improve upon. Every time Margaret comes in and ignites this motivation in her student, she exemplifies the compassionate, community-focused spirit of Potrero Hill and is a testament to just how powerful this spirit can be.
A sense of community and the idea that together we can empower our neighborhoods has been the key to empowering struggling readers throughout the United States. The students Reading Partners serves at Daniel Webster are reading 6 months to 2.5 years behind reading level. Our goal is to ensure those students improve their confidence and their reading skills, expanding their educational opportunities and encouraging a love of learning. You can be a child's superhero by volunteering 45 minutes a week. No experience is required and Reading Partners provides coaching and training to ensure your student makes progress. If you're interested in getting started or have a question, contact Reading Partners' Outreach Coordinator, Fatima Duran at (415) 306-2263 or at Fatima.Duran@readingpartners.org.
